Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that is primarily known for its effectiveness in healing trauma. However, EMDR is truly a comprehensive approach that can be effective for many issues - including phobias, anxiety, creative blocks and negative beliefs.
EMDR is a multi-phase approach - but what people are generally most curious about is the part of therapy where we use bilateral stimulation. During one of these sessions, the bilateral stimulation typically used is tactile or visual. With tactile stimulation, a client will hold a device in each hand that will alternate a gentle vibration. For the visual method (eye movements), a therapist may move their hand back and forth in front of the client, or in a telehealth session a client will watch an image go from side-to-side across their screen. During these sessions, the therapist will support the client in identifying an issue or memory they want to work on. The brain is designed to heal, and EMDR can be a helpful tool to facilitate that process.
As an EMDR Certified therapist through EMDRIA (EMDR International Association), I have completed extensive training and supervised practice in EMDR therapy. This certification represents the highest standard of EMDR training and ongoing skill development.
